Photodynamic therapy is what, and used for what?

Actinic Keratoses: In pdt, a medication is administered to reach a target tissue. Light of a specific wavelength is then used to activate the medication causing injury to the target cells. Pdt is often used to treat precancerous skin lesions. Light sensitive medication is first applied to the skin where it is taken up by the abnormally growing precancerous cells. Light is then applied to cause specific cell injury.

Type of treatment: Photodynamic therapy (pdt) uses a drug, called a photosensitizer, and a light to kill cancer cells. Depending on the type of cancer, the drug is applied to the surface of the skin or injected. It can be used for certain cancers of the skin, esophagus, and lung. Studies are being done looking at the use of pdt for cancers of the head and neck, brain, and gastrointestinal tract.
