Not really known: The cause of gastroschisis is not known, but there are certain statistical associations such as younger maternal age, alcohol consumption or smoking during pregnancy, & certain medications or infections. For more information go to the birth defects homepage of the cdc at: www.Cdc.Gov/ncbddd/birthdefects and select specific birth defects in the left column; scroll down to "gastroschisis".

Gastroschisis: See http://www.Cdc.Gov/ncbddd/birthdefects/gastroschisis.Html?. Gastroschisis is usually not associated with a genetic disorder. The incidence is increased in teen pregnancies, early prenatal exposure to alcohol drugs that constrict blood vessels, like Pseudoephedrine or cocaine, methamphetamine. & tobacco. Abdominal wall defects occur at 5-10 wks.' gestation, often , before pregnancy diagnosis.
