Depends: If severe (say hemoglobin of 7, nl is about 12 or so), and especially if symptoms or signs of poor blood flowto brain, kidneys, etc (shock), may get a transfusion. Recovery depends on genl health and nutrition status-especially iron stores. 1 pint of blood=250mg iron=1gm hemoglobin; iron stores can be 4500mg (often less in women, and in preg-. Thus prenatalvits). !gm/10 d. Can donate 1pt every 2m.

Months!: The life of a red blood cell is 120 days. Old red blood cells are replaced with new red blood cells every 120 day. If you lose blood after delivery or due to surgery, it will take months for your red blood cell count to catch up and make up for that blood loss. It is probably a good idea to talk to your dr about taking an iron supplement to help support the making of new red blood cells.
