Microdermabrasion: I have had many patients have microdermabrasion which seems to remove the top layers of the skin and it improves the appearance of the acne scars.

Scientific Rx: If two weeks on over-the-counter benzoyl peroxide doesn't clear you, get with your physician. You may be a rx for a topical retinoic acid derivative, the oral contraceptive pill (if you're female), topical clindamycin, a systemic antibiotic such as tetracycline, or a dermatology referral for possible isotretinoin. All acne is manageable today; it's not a hygiene or lifestyle problem. We can help.

Usually mild: If you have a major flare as an adult, you might visit your physician to be sure there's not an underlying endocrine cause. Topical benzoyl peroxide is your first line of treatment; if this fails, the topical or systemic rx's your physician can offer will clear you.

Scientific Rx: Home / folk / pop remedies are only adjuncts. If topical benzoyl peroxide has not worked after two weeks, get with your personal physician. Topical or systemic antibiotics, a topical retinoic acid derivative, the oral contraceptive pill for a female, or something more intense like spironolactone or Isotretinoin are all considerations.

Acne: Acne is caused by thick skin oil that blocks the pores and causes blackheads and pimples and inflammation. There are 4 kinds of medicines that help acne: retinoids, like retin a (tretinoin) or retinol. Benzoyl peroxide, and both topical antibiotics, like cleocin, and oral antibiotics, like minocycline. If your acne is bad, you may have to see a dermatologist to get care. The strongest medicine is accutane.
