What has to match between a donor and recipient for a bone marrow transplant to be successful?

(HLA): An essential component of allogeneic transplantation is to identify a human leukocyte antigens (hla)-matched bone marrow donor. Ideally, a brother, sister or possibly another family member can serve as the bone marrow donor. However, many patients do not have a suitable family member to serve as a donor.

Tissue type: The tissue type of the recipient and donor must match. This is a measurement of the hla type which looks at proteins on the surface of our cells that help the immune system recognize 'self' verus 'non-self.'.
