Timing and testing: If sexually active and there is not a normal period, then testing for pregnancy would be useful. If spotting then a typical amount of bleeding in a day or so, especially if not sexually active, then "watchful waiting" is common. If any doubt or problems, then a call to an obgyn provider and/or home pregnancy test would be important. Also i apologize for images added to my answer to this question.

No certainty: there is no way to be certain what is implantation bleeding and what is menstrual period.

Timing: First there really is no such thing as implantation bleeding. There may be a spot or two but not bleeding when the fetus lands on the wall of the uterus. Menstruation happens once per cycle and on time in most cases. Implantation would happen a few days after conception, so much earlier in the cycle than menstruation.

Likely breakthrough: It's almost never implantation bleeding, that is largely an internet myth. If - a big if - you actually get implantation bleed it would be about 7 days after ovulation, or about a week before your expected period. If you bleed when you expect your period, a pregnancy test would be positive if it was implantation.
