Three main reasons: Thrombophlebitis is venous thrombosis and associated inflammation of the affected vein. Also referred to as DVT or deep vein thrombosis. It is almost always the result of one or more of 3 conditions (known as virchow's triad): 1stasis of blood, 2 endothelial injury or 3 hyper-coagulability. Common causes for each: 1 long trip 2 post surgery or trauma 3 birth control pills or blood disorder.

Dr. H'Doubler nailed it. This is the classic description and explanation for most venous thrombotic episodes. Other explanations exist, but the common explanations are common for a reason. I would add smoking to the list as well.

Several factors : can cause a blood clot in the leg. Most commonly when the blood doesn't flow well or pools in an area of the leg during prolonged inactivity, the blood can become "sticky" due to clotting factors and can form a clot.
