A member asked:

How to tell shyness from a mental illness? can be hard to tell?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

All about function: Shyness is a part of personality - the outward appearance of internal feeling. Everyone is perhaps shy or hesitant to share personal aspects of their life. Shyness and a shy personality only become a disorder or illness when they persistently interfere with function. If a person functions well then their shyness is not an illness.
