Added burden: Retinitis pigmentosa which is an inherited failure to thrive of light receptors in the retina is compounded in usher syndrome because in those folks, the hearing also drops with time. So ushers people get both problems.

Inherited Diseases: Retinitis pigmentosa is a group of inherited disorders that cause degeneration of the retina and vision loss. Usher's syndrome is a type of rp combined with hearing and balance problems. The most common visual symptoms are night blindness and gradual loss of peripheral vision. There is currently no proven cure, however the argus ii retinal implant is a possibility in end-stage rp.
