For cataract surgery: When we perform cataract surgery we remove the lens of the eye. In order for the patient to see the lens needs to be replaced. The replacement lens is the intraocular lens implant.

Synthetic silicone : Synthetic silicone or acrylic peices shaped to alter the refraction of the eye. They may be implanted in phakic eyes (natural lens still present) or aphakic eyes (after lens is removed in cataract or prelex surgery) http://www.Prelexbook.Com/press.
