Good sugar control: The complications of diabetes are many, and include eye problems like diabetic retinopathy. Most important in preventing this complication is making sure the diabetes is under good control, and following with your eye doctor at least annually for diabetic eye exams.

Annual eye exams: For those not born blind, diabetes is the number one cause of blindness. It is a big deal, and it is often preventable. The best way to prevent it is to have a good, dilated, eye exam done each year or so, usually by an eye doctor. That way, if certain kinds of damage are seen, procedures might be done to prevent the damage from leading to blindness.
