Many can: Autism spectrum disorder is a spectrum. There are many people who are high functioning with autism that can live, work, have families on their own. There are also many who cannot do this and will never be able to live independently. They will either be in residential facilties or live at home.

Yes: Yes, depending on the indiviual level of functioning, many people with autism can function independantly. Of course there are those at the other end of the scale who will always need some degree of supervision. If you have met 1 person with autism, you have only met one person with autism. Everyone is unique.
