Acute or chronic?: You can lessen acute bronchitis symptoms by taking an antibiotic if there is a bacterial infection. If there is bronchospasm present, you may need bronchodilator and steroid inhalers. Chronic bronchitis is treated with bronchodilator and steroid inhalers as well as oxygen if the oxygen level is low. Smoking cessation also lessens symptoms in both types of bronchitis.
