A member asked:

Is there a medicine to help control diabetic retinopathy?

7 doctors weighed in across 2 answers

Yes: The same medicine that controls the overall blood sugar and diabetic control is what will ultimately control the diabetic retinopathy. However, if there is significant retinopathy, lasers and injections of medicines used to prevent new blood vessel growth are used to control diabetic retinopathy from inside the eye instead of controlling the overall diabetes.

Yes there is: The best way to slow the progression of dr is tight blood sugar and blood pressure control as shown in several large studies. For years, laser was the only treatment for dr but now several medications are being used including triamcinolone, bevacizumab, ranibizumab and several which are in various stages of clinical trial. All currently used meds must be injected into the eye to control dr.
