Follicles and stroma: The ovaries contain eggs or oocytes, which develop inside spherical structures called follicles. Most follicles are found in the outer part of the ovary. The follicles contain only thin layers of cells at first, but later on they become fluid-filled. With regular periods 1-2 follicles release an egg each month. Around the follicles is ovarian stroma, which contains some hormone-producing cells.
