What do they do if my screening mammogram shows a problem?

Additional tests: In most cases, additional mammogram views or an ultrasound of the area or both will be the next step. It is important not to delay follow-up on abnormal test results. Ultimately, if a concern persists a biopsy will be necessary. Be sure to explore minimally invasive biopsy options with your breast specialist such as ultrasound or mammogram guided needle biopsy.

More tests: You can expect more mammogram images, possibly a breast ultrasound. A breast mri, other studies, and biopsy may also be required.

They will: recall you for additional special mammographic views and possibly an ultrasound. This happens about 10% of the time. 80% of the time it turns out to be nothing of concern. Of the rest that go to biopsy, 80% turn out benign.
