Side effects: The general side effects (or more properly, complications) associated with reconstruction are bleeding, infection, poor wound healing, scarring, asymmetry, implant failure or rupture, migration of implant, pain or nerve injury, fat necrosis, recurrence of cancer, inability to breast feed, remodeling of the rib cage from implant pressure, and/or need for further surgery.

Can be complicated: There are many different techniques of breast reconstruction. Simply put, reconstruction following mastectomy for breast cancer can be a very positive procedure for women facing breast cancer treatment. Reconstruction involves stages, can begin immediately or later after mastectomy and involves the use of implants or of body tissue or both. Side effects are similar to most surgeries.

Side effects?: If by side effects, you mean complications then they are those of any operation; infection, bleeding, wound or scar problems, reaction to anesthesia and even death. There are specific ones associated with each operation. Hope that helps.

Side effects: Fortunately the side effects for breast reconstruction are positive. My patients in particular who have a diep flap have a high satisfaction rate with immediate reconstruction especially when i perform the case after they have had children. I end up removing the excess the abdominal tissue in the same manner and a tummy tuck and when i reconstruct their breast i invariably perform a lift.

Depends on procedure: There are general risks and risks that are specific to the type of reconstruction. General risks include failure of the reconstruction, infection, bleeding, changes in sensation, asymmetry, blood clots, ugly scarring, dissatisfaction with the cosmetic results and need for more procedures. Implant reconstruction is also associated with hardening, rippling, rupture, and need for implant replacement.
