Common: The most prevalent (how many have it a given time)is herpes simplex type 2. One in three american women are positive for the antibody to hsv 2 . Most believe that hpv virus (causative agent for abnormal paps) is more common but since it clears completely it is not as prevalent. It has a higher incidence (new cases) than herpes (hsv2) but it doesn't persist as much. Women more than men.
