Condoms: Hsv is spread from one person to another by touching or intimate contact. Oral sex can also allow the virus to spread. You are most contagious when you have an active blister, but the virus can also be spread even when there isn’t a blister present. The best ways to avoid spreading the virus is to not touch active blisters. Using condoms reduces the risk, but not 100%.

Meds lower risk: There is no way to take the risk of transmitting genital herpes to zero. Using condoms helps, but there are antiviral medications that may be taken to suppress shedding of the virus and decrease the risk of transmission. These are usually the same meds used to treat acute outbreaks and are safe in pregnancy, or when trying to conceive.
