Several:: Metabolic syndrome (syndrome x) is characterized by weight on the middle, slowly developing hypertension, lipid abnormalities ( usually high tgs and low hdl), and finally type 2 dm. A strong family hx for any of these components and/or mi stroke is also a clue. Finally, women can have hirsuitism and polycystic ovarian sydrome (pcos), early in the course. Insulin resistance causes these problems.
