A member asked:

Why do vasodilators cause tachycardia and palpitation?

Vasodilators: Vasodilators do what the name implies: these compounds dilate blood vessels, resulting in a decrease in blood pressure. As the baroreceptors detect this, they command the autonomic nervous system to increase adrenaline output. This, in turn, increases heart rate and increases cardiac irritability.

Compensation: The heart has to deliver a certain amount of blood to the body for it to function. Vasodilators decrease the amount of blood returning to the heart, thus requiring the heart to beat harder and faster to keep up the supply. If you have this tachycardia, you're on too much vasodilator and should see your doc to discuss.
