It varies.: Complications can develop after 7- 10 years. Complications are related to the average blood sugar level as monitored by the glycohemoglobin level (a1c). The likelihood of complications with the eyes, kidneys and nerves are increased if the aic level is significantly elevated. Blood pressure control is also very important in decreasing kidney and retina damage.
