Pain with breathing: The most common cause of pain when you take a deep breath in is "pleurisy", a viral inflammation of the lining of the lung, which causes pain when the lungs expand with a deep breath as the lining rubs against the chest wall. Other causes could be pneumonia, a blood clot to the lung, a popped lung, tumor, or liver or gallbladder inflammation.
