A member asked:

Why would a person need a urine methylmalonic acid level test?

Vitamin B 12: Deficiency of vitamin B12 causes elevation of urine methylmalonic acid. Even though we can measure serum levels of B12 this test does not fully assess physiologic status of B12 adequacy.

Not needed except ?: Renal disease can impair mma secretion, raising the serum levels. This test is not needed to assess B12 status unless renal insuffiency is present. Otherwise, the serum test is all that is needed!
