Good clinical exam.: Diagnosis is made on a clinical basis and is by exclusion. In fact, epilepsy is seizures from an underlying cause. Other causes are ruled out by examination, medical history and tests like glucose, cbc, electrolytes, calcium and magnesium to check for conditions, like stroke, etc.. Toxicology is done as drugs can be a cause. If no cause is found clinical exam determines type. Tx. Cause or sz.

Video-EEG Monitoring: The gold standard is video-eeg monitoring. It is essential to capture the seizure during veeg recording to: make sure that the behaviors are consistent with a non-epileptic seizure, and to make sure that there are no changes on the eeg that go along with an epileptic seizure. Further investigations are needed to determine the underlying cause, which may be physiological or psychological.
