Use Lead apron: They are safe only if a lead apron is used to cover the abdomen if you are or suspect that you might be pregnant to avoid fetal alterations during development.

Avoidance: Avoid x-rays during first trimester and try to wait until at least the 2nd trimester, in emergencies only. Best to wait until 3rd trimester before having dental x-rays. Use of lead apron is always recommended during dental x-rays.

It's simple. Tell your Dentist that you might be pregnant. (S)he will then follow the appropriate protocols protect your baby and gather the diagnostic information required toaddressn your health. That will include delaying x-rays until 2nd or 3rd trimester, lead aprons, collimated exposure, etc. And today's digital systems use considerably lower exposures than the film era exposures.
