Short stay unit: An ed obs unit is usually a short stay unit- patients are placed there when they are expected to only be in the hospital less than 24 hours- depending on the unit- some may use it if you are expected to need even only 8 hours of ongoing care. It is a way to give you concentrated treatment an avoid a hospital admission.
