Ask one simple ?: Who would you want to make decisions (either medical or financial) for you if you couldn't make decisions yourself. Then you need to make sure the person would choose the same person on several occasions. This is the medical perspective. Most states have specific legal requirements also. Check with a local attorney for the final opinion.
