Most cancers: Most cancers arise from somatic cells. The change involves a number of steps, though one of the steps may be an inherited defect/mutation. Cells acquire mutations and the ones providing a survival/growth advantage induce proliferation that leads to more mutations. A fully developed cancer has, on average, about 90 mutations.
