Difficult to prevent: Damage to heart muscle resulting in injury signficantly compromising function can be due to many causes, most commonly due to coronary artery disease. High blood pressure, heritable, infiltrative or infectious causes can also cause cardiomyopathy. Treating risk factors can reduce the risk of preventable disease, but the infectious (especially viral) causes are bad luck & genetic susceptibility.

Be healthy and lucky: Avoid excess alcohol which is a common and preventable cause. Stay normal weight, don't smoke, avoid fatty foods, keep blood pressure under control. Choose the right parents. Beyond that, stay lucky. Most cardiomyopathy is preventable but some isn't. Same as cancer....How do you prevent it?
