Mathematical: There is a standard equation which relates cardiac output to blood pressure and vascular resistance. The lesion is q = (map – rap)/tpr where q = cardiac output, MAP = mean arterial pressure, RAP = right atrial pressure, and tpr = total peripheral resistance (also called systemic vascular resistance).

Resistance: For fixed cardiac output, BP will vary with peripheral vascular resistance, and vice versa. The components are more complicated however.
