A member asked:

How do they clean out ice freezers at fast food restaurants?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Not enough: Interesting question. While it might be state specific, health departments don't test ice for bacteria and fungus, and they only do a visual inspection. The requirement to pass is the ice machines must be maintained enough to be clean at sight and touch. Freezing does not necessarily kill organisms, and dangerous bacteria and fungi have been found in ice from restaurants. Bagged ice may be safer.
