Delirium rating: Patients in the intensive care unit can become quite disoriented. There can be many reasons....Drugs, sleep deprivation, underlying dementia, depression, the disease(s) themselves, metabolic factors, etc. The delirium rating scale is one way to try to quantify and discriminate the severity and contributing factors when delirium occurs.

Diagnostic tool: There are a number of tools used to diagnose delirium in the intensive care unit. The two most common tools in north america include the cam-icu and the intensive care delirium screening checklist. Both have good sensitivity for detecting delirium.
