Health and wellness: what athletes have the shortest lifespans?

12 doctors weighed in across 3 answers

Football, boxing: In football and boxing, repeated direct injury is sustained by the body and this generally does severe enough damage to shorten the lifespan. Add to this the use of anabolic and other medications like steroids common in football and you have a further lifespan shortener. For a long life take up golf or baseball.

As far as I can tell: there is not conclusive data to prove that any particular athletes live shorter lifespans than the general population. Of course, it seems reasonable that the repeated concussions suffered in boxing and football can't be doing anything good for longevity. But the studies to prove it are lacking. Conversely, there is some data that endurance athletes may live LONGER than the general population.
