A member asked:

Can bad posture cause cause neck pain?

16 doctors weighed in across 3 answers

Yes it can: Forward head posture (head is in front of shoulders) can put an undue stress on the neck vertebrae/ muscles/ligaments causing them to work overtime to carry the weight of the head. This can lead to painful neck conditions. Often with poor posture the shoulders are rounded forward which further aggravates the problem. Give your neck a break and keep your head above your shoulders.

Yes: Slouching forward with rounded shoulders puts extra stress on the muscles and joints of the neck. This can create pain.

Absolutely: When a person slouches forward, as in someone with poor posture, the neck has to go into a more extended position to keep the head looking forward, and this can definitely increase neck pain. This can occur not only with poor posture, but also someone who is working in a position that is not very ergonomic, as in someone that uses a keyboard a lot. Thank you for the question.
