What are the symptoms of transient tachypnea of the newborn?

Transient tachypnea: Transient tachypnea is -- transient --meaning it doesn't last very long and tachypnea is elevated respiratory rate in a newborn. Normal resp. Rate in a newborn is 30-60/min. Ttn as it is called is caused by delayed clearance of lung fluid at birth. It is more common in c/s babies since their chest does not get a "squeeze" like a vaginal delivery. The baby may need oxygen and ng feedings.

Workup/Mgt: The symptoms can include rapid respiratory rate, poor feeding and desaturation. If the underlying cause is retained fluid, the neonatal lung has a way to remove the fluid usually within 48 hours. Most infants with a history of TTN do quite well. The management includes obtaining a chest radiograph and providing supportive care including oxygen.
