Hormones: Continuous birth control pills (not having a period) may reduce migraines, ultra low dose pill like loloestrin may help. I also use a low estrogen patch during the week of the cycle. Treatment usually requires some trial and error.

It depends: There are many options for treating menstrual migraines, and not all involve hormones. The first things to try are the same as you would use for any headache - over-the-counter medications (those with caffeine seem to do a better job). Beyond that, there are prescription migraine meds which can help. Hormones like birth control pills, when used solely for migraines, are a last resort for me.
