Normal process: It is normal for a 9 month old to be wary of strangers (anyone who isn't family). It is an important part of their development- learning to separate from their mom and gain trust in others, but it takes time. When visiting friends, let him stay near you while you talk to others and he will gradually become more comfortable with them.
