Premenstrual symptom: By "protected sex", did you mean combination condom (82% success rate) + hormonal pill/patch/injection (91-99% success rate), or did you mean condom alone or hormonal contraceptive alone? And was the contraception used properly? If protection was properly used, chance of pregnancy is low, and breast tenderness more likely from premenstrual symptoms. Hope that helps.

Normal: It is quite common to have breast tenderness before your period starts especially if you have a lot of caffeine in your diet. This should be gone after your period. If your period doesn't start or the breast tenderness doesn't go away, then it is time to be more concerned. Hope this helps.
