A member asked:

If elder is in hospital for broken hip and acting odd (and prior stroke), shouldnt they order tests for stroke?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Possibly: A hip fracture may be associated with pulmonary emboli which in rare instances can (through a patent foramen ovale) cause a stroke. More likely, confusion and behavior changes could occur because of medications (narcotics). Occasionally, a pulmonary emboli may cause confusion by decreasing oxygen availability.
