A member asked:

How do you know a cold sore officially goes away? when can you kiss and preform oral? how much time is safe?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

When it's gone: Viral shedding occurs during the prodrome period (when there is tingling and pain but no lesion), and while there are active vesicles and crusts. Once all of that is gone, and you cannot see anything abnormal about your lip, you should not be contagious.
