Trauma: There are several conditions that can cause the symptoms that you described. Although some may be benign, there are others that should be treated. I suggest you see your primary care doctor as soon as these symptoms appear.

Need an exam: Regards the "large knot" at the base of your skull, this is something that a physician would have to see and examine and giving you a list of possible causes won't be very helpful for you. Common: most if not all of my patients with migraines have tenderness and "knotts" at the base of their neck. In fact, if you inject that area during a bad migraine attack it takes the pain away. sometimes, you can have tenderness and a knott in this area due to a genetic condition called an arnold chiari malformation, which leads to migraines. May be a good idea to get MRI of upper spine to see
