A member asked:

Can macrodantin (nitrofurantoin) cause abdominal pain? i have had a burning sensation in my stomach for a while now and occasionally get sharp pains in my stomach area

A doctor has provided 1 answer

YES. YES.: Macrodantin (nitrofurantoin) can cause G.I. upset. Taking it right after a meal might help. ANY antibiotic can upset the normal healthy bacteria in the gut and cause GI symptoms. If you're on a short course of Macrodantin (nitrofurantoin), bear with it. If you are on it long term please let your doctor know about the problem.. If the pain continues after stopping the med, or worsens, seek medical care.
