Sometimes...: You are thinking of bronchoprovocation testing. During this test, you inhale very small amounts of a chemical that induces bronchospasm in susceptible patients. You then have a pulmonary function test and are tested for airway obstruction. If present, the obstruction is immediately reversed with a bronchodilator inhaler. Most people will have obstruction prior to any symptoms. It is very safe.
