Yes and no: Genital herpes can shed at variable amounts over time. The amount of virus that you shed depends mostly on your immune system. You can definitely shed virus without an outbreak, and unfortunately there's no way to determine if you are shedding virus on a given day. Some people shed more than others. For those reasons, we generally advise patients that they are "always potentially contagious".
