Those with ESLD: Those with end stage lung disease. The most common causes of lung disease that lead to transplant are copd/emphysema; cystic fibrosis; and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Alph-1 antitrypsin deficiency and pulmonary hypertension are less common.

Lung disease: Te largest percentage of patients who seek lung transplant have underlying copd. Transplant is also done for patients with cystic fibrosis, pulmonary fibrosis and a variety of other lung diseases.

Otherwise healthy: Lung transplantation is performed when survival is limited by a lung disease. Candidates must be otherwise strong enough to get through the transplant. Only non-smokers are considered.
