A member asked:

What is strep test during pregnancy and when is it done?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

GBS: The strep test is performed between 34 and 37 weeks and is looking for Group B beta streptococcus colonization. This bacteria is the #1 cause of blood infection in newborns (sepsis). E. coli being #2. Women who are positive should get antibiotics during labor. It is not usually an issue for the pregnant women herself, which is why we just treat once in labor.
