Many possibilities: It could be one of the many things possibly going on such as acute bursitis, housemaid's knee, meniscal or ligament tera etc. A lot depends on what you did the day before. If pain is on the back of thigh upon lying, it could be popliteal bursitis. You may want to wear a knee sleeve/brace and use ice and naprosyn (naproxen). See your doctor if not better.
