A member asked:

How are blood transfusions commonly administered during surgery when a patient looses almost 5 pints of blood from an injury during the surgery?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

What are you asking?: Can you clarify? Blood is administered in this situation most often as packed red cells. We pathologists run the blood bank and, curiously, are the only business people in a community that do what we can to reduce demand for our product. There are situations in which there's no substitute. If you have a more specific question, please resend it.
