Botulism is a: serious paralytic illness caused by a nerve toxin that is produced by a particular type of bacteria. Foodborne botulism is caused by eating foods that contain the botulinum toxin. Wound botulism is caused by toxin produced from a wound infected with Clostridium botulinum. The symptoms your friend's mom is having are definitely cause for alarm and she should get to the emergency room ASAP!
